Transportation Barge and Rail Logistics Coordinator - 2021

Department: 200 - Op Admin
Location: Mokena, IL


The Transportation Barge and Rail Logistics Coordinator will monitor, maintain and execute strategic logistics plan for bulk material movements between sources and terminal locations. This position will coordinate day to day logistics activities to provide effective logistics management to ensure safe, consistent and compliant transportation while maximizing efficiencies to ensure lowest cost operations.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Fleet Management:
• Provide weekly and monthly fleet reporting with emphasis on detention times, cycle times and cargo capacity utilization
• Monitor shipments daily to ensure fluidity on each lane
• Evaluate business forecasts and silo levels to proactively manage fleet sizes
• Work closely with carrier providers to plan for scheduled or unscheduled maintenance to mitigate supply chain disruptions
• Responsible for planning and facilitating fleet maintenance as needed

• Facilitate barge/railcar releases and billing activities with the appropriate carrier
• Ensure that monthly accruals are accurately tracked and reported to the accounting group
• Provide inventory reports for materials in transit to each destination

Business Development:
• Work closely with carrier providers to generate freight rate estimates on new lanes
• Negotiate freight rates for new lanes as well as annual increases on existing lanes
• Work with internal sales team and carrier providers to locate sites for new opportunities in key markets

Employee Relations:
• Responsible for the coordination efforts between Dispatch, Dispatch Manager, Sales, Accounting and General Manager

Global Responsibilities:
• Regular attendance and physical presence at work is an essential function of this position
• This job may require additional duties not listed above and the employee may be asked to perform those duties to meet business needs

Education/Specialized Knowledge/Professional Certifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• 3 to 5 years of experience in a professional environment required
• Bachelor’s degree in related major preferred

• Two years of rail or barge transportation/supply chain experience required

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Firm understanding of mathematics and a basic knowledge of accounting
• Excellent problem solving/analyzing skills, and high level of attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and quickly respond to challenges under tight deadlines
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion

Working Conditions:
• Operation within a professional office environment
• Routine usage of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets
• Travel less than 5% of the time

Physical Requirements:
• Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms
• Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
